Focus on stress as Mental Health Awareness Week begins

The City of Wolverhampton Council is marking Mental Health Awareness Week (14 to 20 May, 2018) by pledging to help address the stigma surrounding mental health.

It is thought that around a quarter of people are affected by mental health issues each year, and the Mental Health Foundation is using Mental Health Awareness Week to tackle stress, as this can be a key factor to improving people's mental health and wellbeing.

Councillor Paul Sweet, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "Having good mental health is as important as having good physical health - it affects how we think, feel and act, and helps determine how we handle stress and relate to others.

"Stress can affect individuals in a number of ways, physically and emotionally, and it's vital that we manage stress as much as possible to keep it at a healthy level."

A number of events are taking place in Wolverhampton during Mental Health Awareness Week, including activities organised by Starfish Wolverhampton Social Hub (details here), HeadStart Wolverhampton (details here) and a Coffee and Chat at Central Library (details here).

People can also pick up free mental health advice and information leaflets from the atrium area on the ground floor of the Civic Centre, St Peter's Square, throughout the week. Meanwhile, the Mental Health Foundation has produced a guide to managing and reducing stress, available at Mental Health Foundation - How to manage and reduce stress.
